Country Lace Afghan

All has been quiet on the homefront this week.  I’ve just completed the first of 4 Christmas presents.  I’m starting early this year so I’ll be sure to finish by December – hopefully.

CL

I had lots of fun making this one… once I got it right.  I must have stopped and started this one ten times.  By the time I stopped frogging and started crocheting, my yarn looked like curly fries.  But I used it anyway!  I found my original inspiration for this pattern here.  HOWEVER, the instructions are bad!  When it gets time to join, the instructions are nearly impossible to follow.  This is the reason I had such a hard time with it.  So, I simplified them and added a few of my own touches.  Here ya go:

CL1

Materials: 4 Skeins Off White, 2 skeins Seafoam, 3 Skeins Light Grey

                         Size I Hook

R1: Ch3, 15 dc in ring.  Join with sl st in top of ch3

R2: Ch1, sc in same st as joining. (Ch3, sc in next dc) 15 times.  Hdc in first sc to join and form last space

R3: Ch1, sc over hdc. (ch4, sc in next ch3 space) 15 times.  Ch1, hdc in first sc to join and form last space

R4: Ch1, sc over hdc. *7dc in next space, sc in next space^ (ch2, sc in next space) twice*.  Repeat from * to * until last space, end at ^.    Ch2, sc in last space, ch2, join with sl st to first sc.

R5: Ch1, (sc, ch2, sc) all in first sc.  *Ch2, skip 2dc (sc, ch2, sc) in next dc, (sc, ch4, sc) in next dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next dc, ch2, skip 2dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next sc, sc in next ch2 space, ch2, sc in next ch2 space ^, (sc, ch2, sc) in next sc*.  Repeat from * to * around, end at ^, join in first sc.  Fasten off

From this point on, you will join as you go.  Joining takes place in round 5

Rd5: Ch1, (sc, ch2, sc) in first sc, ch2, skip 2 dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next dc, sc in next dc, join corner.  *SC in next dc, join ch2 space.  Ch2, skip 2 dc, sc in next sc, join ch2 space.  Sc in next ch2 space, join center ch2 space.  Sc in next ch2 space, sc in next sc, join ch2 space.  Ch2, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, join ch2 space.  Sc in next dc, join center*. ONE SIDE JOINED

(continue from * to * in order to join an additional side – otherwise skip to step below)

*(sc, ch2, sc) in next dc, ch2, skip 2 dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next sc, sc in next ch2 space, ch2, sc in next ch2 space ^, (sc, ch2, sc) in next sc, ch2, skip 2 dc, (sc, ch2, sc) in next dc, (sc, ch4, sc) in next dc*.  Repeat from * to *, ending at ^.  Join, fasten off.

Use this GRAPH  to help you along.  The graph lays out how you should join the squares. Start with 1 and work your way to 100.. so you work them in columns. You can also use the graph to chart out how your finished piece will look if you add different colors or a different pattern.. color or shade in the squares to give you a visual representation before starting your piece.    Happy Hooking!

This afghan is available for sale here.  In the color and pattern of your choosing.

      • Thanks….I ended up going to the link in the article from your inspiration …..took me right to the red heart pattern and grapgh. I have already started the squares but think I will be joining all at once at the end. Mainly because it is easier for me to work in squares (more mobility) than to drag a big project around with me, lol! Thanks for the idea 🙂

  1. Hi, Vanessa, I love this afghan. I am having trouble joining the squares. They are not turning out like the picture. Do you have a video on youtube on how to join them? I have been crocheting & knitting for years, But for some reason its not coming out right. Thanks. 🙂
